Rotary Jugendaustausch - Host Families

During your exchange year you will live with 3-4 volunteer host families. They are looking forward to welcoming you into their home and family and you should feel at home with them. Remember, you are not a guest in the home - you are a family member! Along with this experience comes responsibility. You are expected to help out around the house, to take part in conversations, and to show interest in the family, your surroundings and Switzerland in general.  Appreciation can be shown through a simple, heart-felt 'Danke' or 'Merci' and / or with a small token gift.

Eating meals together at the table, especially the evening meal, is very important to Swiss families. This time is used to talk about what happened that day, what the family members experienced and generally to ask how one is doing. Participate actively. Your host family is genuinely interest in what you have to say. Also, why not cook a typical meal from your country or teach your host family a popular game or dance? Not only would this be greatly appreciated, it would also be a wonderful experience for everyone.

Open and honest communication is essential for a successful exchange year. Since not every family has the same rules or expectations, our 'First Night Questionnaire' is desigend to ease the transition into the new family so that you know what is expected of you. Throughout your exchange, if you are not sure about something, ask. Let your host parents know as soon as you do of any changes to your class schedule, after school activities, etc. This helps prevent misunderstandings.
